Summary
Carmen Laforet: Nothing
Nothing (Spanish Nada) is the first novel by Carmen Laforet, published in 1945, and one of the most important works of Spanish post-war literature. The novel follows Andrea, a young girl who comes to Barcelona to start her studies, but instead of the expected freedom and intellectual rise, she finds a gloomy and chaotic reality in her relatives' house.
Through an atmosphere of anxiety, emotional tension and quiet rebellion, Laforet shows the decadence and moral emptiness of Spanish society after the civil war. Andrea fights for her own identity and independence, in a world where silence, hidden traumas and repressed emotions reign.
Nada is a novel of subtle strength, written from the perspective of a young woman who observes, survives and quietly grows. It is the winner of the prestigious Nadal prize and remains one of the key works of the modern Spanish novel.
