Summary
Bernardo Atxaga: Obabakoak
Bernardo Atxaga is "a wide-ranging author, he writes poetry, theater pieces, texts for music, newspaper articles and children's books, stories and novels. His greatest success was precisely this collection of short stories, "Obabakoak" (1988). He wrote it in the Basque language, and then with the help of close friends translated into Spanish, mainly Castilian language.<...> It is a collection of 26 stories, apparently independent, which, combined into a novel, form a unique literary reality of the mythical world of Obaba, an imaginary village in the Basque Country." At the end of the book, several texts are printed that talk about the author and his works and about the history of Basque literature. Let us note that Bernardo Atxaga is a pseudonym, and that the real name of the writer of this unusual but very readable novel is Joseba Irazu Gormendia.
