Summary

Geraldine Brooks: The March Family

Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women in 1868, a novel about four sisters growing up during the Civil War in the United States of America. But as Geraldine Brooks herself says in the afterword: "Louise May Alcott's story deals with how the year they lived on the edge of war changed the characters of the little women, but what the war did to Mr. March was not said. It was in that void that I let my imagination run wild." May Alcott based the character of Mr. March Louis on her father Bronson, thus intertwining reality and fiction, which Geraldine Brooks used masterfully in this novel, which is neither a biography of Bronson Alcott nor a sequel to Little Women, but a truly original and extremely interesting work about a man whose faith in people and God is eroded by his own failings in an extreme, wartime age. Many historical figures and events are deftly connected, and Mr. March's narration is briefly joined by his wife Marmee, which further complicates not only their relationship but also the reader's view of the protagonist. Reading The March Family will be enjoyed by everyone who loved Little Women as well as those who love historical novels and human narratives in a tangle of fateful events, when in moments of war, crisis and suffering there is a core that needs to be protected, and that is those we love. For Mr. March, they are his little women. Geraldine Brooks was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for this novel. The Croatian translation of Obitelja March, the second book in Algoritm's library, is presented by Andrea Zlatar, signed by Maja Ivanković, and the illustration on the cover was created by Nenad Martić.
