Summary
Ivan Antunović: The Outlaw: A Historical Tale
The Outlaw is a historical story by Croatian revivalist, bishop and writer Ivan Antunović, first published in Zagreb in 1875. The work is based on the life of Ignjat Martinović (1755–1795), a Franciscan, scientist and political thinker who left the monastic life and joined the Jacobin movement during the French Revolution. Through his fate, Antunović shapes a moral-historical narrative about religion, identity, loyalty to the people and the consequences of ideological alienation.
The work was written in the spirit of the Croatian national revival among the Bunjevci and Šokci and represents one of Ivan Antunović's most famous literary achievements. In addition to the historical theme, the book is significant as a document of the cultural and political thought of the Croatian community in the Danube region during the 19th century.
