Summary
Daniel Defoe: An Essay on Business
An Essay on Business was the first book published by Daniel Defoe (c.1659/1661-1731), writer, journalist, pamphleteer and the memorable author of Robinson Crusoe. It is a wonderful product of an unusual mind and almost whimsically detailed presentation, imbued with a healthy sense of humor as the basis of a recognizably English style. In The Experiment, Defoe embarks on practical proposals that will not come to fruition until long after his death. The book perfectly corresponds to the time of its author. Just thirty years earlier, the Royal Society was founded (1660), Newton, Boyle, Hooke and Halley were in full swing, and it was also a time of rapid commercial expansion and technological development, during which Britain grew into a dominant force in world trade.
