Summary
Arsen Dedić: Padova - Memories from sick leave
"Our only health is illness" was written by Arsen's extremely dear, close Tin Ujević, and if this is not the absolute truth, this paradox well relates and relativizes our relationship to the first and last things of existence. Contrasts and aporias have really attracted Dedić as a writer for a long time, and thinking in bed before (and after) the operation must have developed to a paroxysm the tendency to speak of extremes, to feel opposites that attract and repel at the same time. If it was expected that hope and hopelessness would alternate in a dramatic amplitude, to strengthen the awareness of the inevitability of touching the beginning and the end, in Dedic's febrile imagination, the height and the abyss, the light and the dark, the game with death, still merged in a special way. Indeed, east and west, wine and water, youth and old age continue their polemical dialogue.
