Summary
Mario Pomilio: The Fifth Gospel
Peter Bergin, an American officer who was stationed in Cologne, Germany in 1945, lives in an abandoned pastor's house, where he finds documents about the mysterious fifth gospel in the library among the papers that belonged to the deceased pastor. It seemed that the priest devoted many years of his life to the research of the same.
An officer who in civilian life was a university professor and historian becomes engrossed in the riddle and after his discharge from the army dedicates himself to research. For this purpose, he gathers a small group of young people, friends and students, and with their help he begins to collect any evidence that could be useful for solving the mystery of the fifth gospel...
In 1974, Pomilio won the "first edition" of the Premio Flaiano award for the unpublished play The Fifth Evangelist, the forerunner of the novel The Fifth Gospel, for which he won the Premio Naples, 1978 Prix du Meilleur livre étranger and 1979 Pax award in Warsaw.
