Summary
Edward Bellamy: Looking back 2000-1887
The novel of American realist literature captured the attention of the literary public for the idea that the new society is reformed to a degree of equality. The writer conceived the common good, against the monopolistic understanding of the economy and the world, quite concretely, transforming an ordinary idealistic fairy tale into a concept of social reform in all segments of society, for all classes and races. The main character, a representative of the upper class, wakes up from a hypnotic dream in the year 2000 after 1887 and realizes that society has reached a social level of completeness. The writer acquired his views on working-class reality in Europe, but with reason, in the just realization of human aspirations and achievements, he situated it in a North American city. The danger of the novel correspondingly approaching the left options was avoided. This utopian novel is characterized by the freshness of the statements, especially in the dialogue, and stylistic refinement. At the end of the book there are appendices that refer to the structure of the book, its creation and reception and interpretation, along with a discussion about utopias from the pen of the translator Adnan Melkić.
