Summary

Dylan Thomas: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog is a fictional autobiography of the iconic Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, written in ten separate, yet mutually complementary movements. Thomas's prose is poetic, sometimes pathetic, atmospheric, sometimes melancholic... The portrait of the artist does not suffer from a classic narrative, on the contrary, everything happens "one warm Saturday", in which the writer sees a lonely young man "with the shadows of his doom", about whom he wonders: "Why did he huddle there with another moody man and me, listening to our breathing, the sea, the wind that blows the fry under the bow, a dog on a chain, a fog horn and the clatter of a tram twelve streets away, looking at a lighted match, the fresh face of a boy peering into the darkness, the rays of a lighthouse, the waving of a hand with a cigarette, when the city stretched out in the rain, pubs and clubs and coffee houses, streets with tramps and arcades on the promenade were full of friends and enemies?" the admirer of Bob Dylan, supposedly, took on a surname - but two nouns, or two substances, determined his destiny and he surrendered to them with the fullness of his being and God-given talent: poetry and alcohol. "Let's be happy and drink, tomorrow we're gone", says one of the heroes of Thomas's prose, summarizing what was at the basis of his efforts and dedication, and why he died already at the age of 39... to become a legend and a star whose shine
reaches up to our days.
