Summary
Grazia Deledda: After the Divorce
The novel "After the Divorce" (Dopo il divorzio) is one of the most famous works of Grazia Deledda, Italian writer and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1926). The story is set in rural Sardinia, where customs and poverty are as strong as nature and human destiny.
The story follows a woman who was abandoned by her husband after being released from prison, even though he was unjustly convicted. Faced with the condemnation of society, poverty and the struggle for survival, the heroine must decide whether to stay true to her past or choose a new future. Deledda writes with empathy and a deep understanding of women's position in traditional society, and her style abounds in lyrical descriptions and strong moral tension.
A touching novel about justice, sacrifice, love and freedom - and about women trying to find their voice in a world that often takes it away from them.
