Summary

Boris Beck: The Last Night of the Great Storyteller The novel "The Last Night of the Great Storyteller" Boris Beck is a fictionalized biography of Aesop, an ancient storyteller known mostly for his fables, but he was also the author of politically engaged prose, and he was tired because of that. Aesop was born a slave and physically deformed, and in childhood he did not even speak. From the fringes of society, thanks to his exceptional intelligence, he managed to become a civil servant who performed confidential work for the kings. His wit made the wife of a stupid philosopher whom he served in his youth fall in love with him, and he was even invited to the company of the legendary seven wise men. During his diplomatic travels in the Middle East, he reached Babylon, and according to tradition, he even met the Truth in the desert. As a servant of Croesus - who suffered a military disaster due to the fraudulent prophecy of Delphi - he goes to the Greek oracle and accuses the priests there of hypocrisy and exploiting people's naivety. They, in turn, falsely accuse him of theft and sentence him to death - but before that, Aesop, in the form of a young guard who guards him, finds an heir to his art who will further spread the freedom of storytelling. Boris Beck was born in 1965 in Zagreb, where he graduated and received his doctorate at the Faculty of Philosophy. As a journalist and editor, he worked in Vijenec, Zarez and Nacional, and now he is employed as an assistant professor at the Study of Journalism at FPZG. He is the author of two novels - "Pandora's Box" and "I wouldn't talk about it" (in collaboration with Igor Rajki) - one book of short stories ("Bullet in the heart of St. Augustine", published in addition to Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria) and two books of essays ("Wings in a Suitcase" and "Dead Men under the Quilt"). He was an editor in several magazines for culture, literature and science - Gordogan, Fantom slobode, Outsajderski fragments, Knjigomat, Op. a. – and also in the publishing houses Durieux and AGM. He is a collaborator of the Croatian Bible Society as a stylistic editor of the new translation of the Holy Scriptures. He is the recipient of several literary awards and scholarships from the Ministry of Culture for encouraging valuable creativity.
