Summary
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: Trip to Italy
In September 1876, Goethe set off on a long and almost obsessively desired trip to Italy. He did not inform anyone about this trip, which was in a way his search for his spiritual homeland, but secretly headed for Italy, and stayed for almost two years. During his stay on the other side of the Alps, Goethe wrote a lot - primarily a diary, but also letters that, together with these diary entries, he then sent to friends in Germany. Most of the letters were addressed to Charlotte von Stein, with whom Goethe had a romantic relationship in Weimar. On the basis of preserved diaries and letters, Goethe compiled the book "Journey to Italy", which is a kind of continuation of his autobiographical work "Poetry and Reality", which he wrote throughout his life and occasionally published parts of. In Europe, the work "Journey to Italy" is considered a classic and indispensable for Goethe, and it will be interesting for today's readers too, even though it was created centuries ago.
