Summary
Leopoldo Alas: Regent I-II
A novel in two volumes that represents the pinnacle of Spanish naturalism. The scene of the action is the city of Vetusta and its district Encimada as a model society in transformation from the Old Regime to the new civil order. The central character, Ana Ozores Regenta, is the daughter of an aristocrat who betrayed his class by defining himself as a free thinker and revolutionary. Ana is torn by an internal conflict between unreleased passion and drive, and attempts at sublimation with the help of poetry and mysticism. Dissatisfied with her marriage, she seeks refuge in a spiritual, platonic intimacy with her confessor Magistral. She also engages in a love affair with the unworthy, prosaic and vulgar Messiah, who represents the symbol and very quintessence of Vetušća society. Numerous conflicts are built within and around these characters, which give the novel an inner tension.
