Summary
Dato Turashvili: Death in Jeans
The book Death in Jeans is based on the most tragic and scandalous story of the 1980s, during Soviet Georgia. Seven young people hijacked a plane to escape from the Soviet Union: it was an unprecedented undertaking, because at that time the very thought of escaping from the Soviet Union was a criminal offence. The Soviet authorities sentenced most of these young people to death for this more naive than dangerous act. Public opinion was divided. Part of the public considered the young rebels to be ordinary terrorists. The others contradicted this view, arguing that life under the Soviet regime was so unbearable that even the hijacking of a plane could be justified. The dramatization of Death in Jeans has seen numerous performances in Georgia and is considered one of the most successful theater performances there.
