Summary
Isabel Allende: The Fragile Petal of the Sea
Chilean writer Isabel Allende's masterpiece, her latest novel Largo pétalo del mar, was published to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the landing of refugees from the Spanish Civil War in Chile. Pablo Neruda, a famous Chilean poet, who is one of the main characters in the book, organized their emigration by equipping the legendary ship Winnipeg with the necessary equipment and accommodation for over two thousand Spanish refugees, who will influence the later development of Chile, enriching its cultural and social life.
Based on historical events, Isabel Allende builds an extraordinary story about life, love, friendship, loyalty, reversals of fortune and fate, as well as extremely strong characters, describing through them life in exile and man's eternal need to find his place under the sun.
Isabel Allende herself says that this novel, although it takes place in the past, is extremely current, because nowadays we are witnessing an increasing number of displaced, scattered, exiled, refugees, many people who are losing their roots, homes and homelands.
