Summary

Terazije Boško Tokin

Terazije belong to a specific narrower thematic genre - the Belgrade novel. Much has been written about Belgrade, but, perhaps paradoxically, and yet perhaps quite logically, few novels have been written that aesthetically reliably represent a certain era in the turbulent centuries-long development of this city. There are even fewer novels that have managed to present a specific spirit that takes shape in a mosaic made up of historical changes, transitional adversities and the fateful position of the city as a gate between East and West, i.e. a crossroads where different eras and cultures meet.

Tokin's Belgrade, on the other hand, is torn between high and low passions as a place that is reflected in its reflection as a vision of a sacred space where man is allowed to perform feats, but also lasts as a meeting place trials in which moral and every other imaginable fall is nevertheless the expected outcome of human existence. It is precisely this described hydraulics - at the same time both titanic and halved, both stable and inflated, both monolithic and manic - that makes the play in Belgrade Tokin's greatest narrative achievement, as well as the success of portraying the eternal city to the full extent of its inconsistencies, and that the man who is born, lives and dies in it is depicted as a being whose eyes are fixed on the sky at the same moment when his jaw is buried in the mud.
