Rudan Vedrana

Summary

Vedrana Rudan: Ear, Throat, Knife

Almost a decade has passed since the first edition of Vedrana Rudan's debut novel "Ear, Throat, Knife" which seriously shook local literature in 2002. The readership in Croatia and Serbia reacted simultaneously and identically to an unexpectedly strong stimulus by the name of Vedrana Rudan: with endless enthusiasm. The book became an instant bestseller. That should not be surprising. No one and never (we even dare to add nowhere) managed to pour into the heads of the readers such an amount of vitriol, raw energy and hilarious humor as we found on the pages of Vedrana Rudan's debut. And all of this would be fine, and nothing would be exceptional about it, and everything would be in perfect harmony with the basic coordinates of the new realistic prose of the time, if the heroine/narrator of this novel was not a woman in her fifties, Tonka Babić, a kind of Rudanica's alter-ego, who without any pause and without a hair on her tongue speaks, babbles, gossips, screams, threatens, warns, testifies, narrates about everything that concerns her, her life and the whole world. "Ear, throat, knife" is absolutely the first book that, after all the wars of the nineties, became an indisputable and simultaneous hit in Croatia as well as in Serbia. This new edition of hers in BiH, which appears after numerous reprints and editions throughout the region, Europe and the world, speaks convincingly enough in favor of the fact that it is a book in which the market is still keenly interested and that, at least sometimes - and this is exactly the case with the book "Ear, Throat, Knife" - commercial success and literary quality live in happy harmony.
