Schlink Bernhard

Summary

Bernhard Schlink: The Weekend

An unexpected pardon brings Jörg to freedom after spending twenty-four years in prison, convicted of quadruple murder and numerous acts of terrorism as a member of a radical left-wing organization. His sister Christiane organizes a gathering of old friends to help Jörg reintegrate into society. After they find themselves for a weekend on a lonely property, the painful and never fully enlightened history slowly begins to come to light, along with the devastating consequences that Jörg might have for the not entirely clear present...

Bernhard Schlink became one of the most acclaimed authors of contemporary German prose with the novel The Woman I Read, the first book from that country to reach the top of The New York Times bestseller list, and it was also adapted into an Oscar-winning film. Algorithm's readers also know Schlink from the novel Homecoming, also a work that contributes to Germany's reconciliation with the tragic legacy of the Second World War.

In the novel Weekend, Schlink turns to condemnations and penances related to the most recent turning point in German history - the violent actions of the Red Brigades and its consequences for current German society. However, the main strength of Weekend lies in the refined design of the characters and their relationships, and the careful avoidance of opportunities for too easy condemnation and even easier atonement of their past and future deeds.

The translation from the German is signed by Štefica Martić, and Weekend is the jubilee, sixtieth, book in the library presented by Zlatko Crnković.
