Pamuk Orhan

Summary

Orhan Pamuk: My name is red

Istanbul, sixteenth century. Outside the walls of the luxurious palace, poverty, plague, immorality and unrest reign. This, of course, does not prevent the Sultan from ordering a book in honor of his reign that will show all the greatness of the Ottoman Empire. For this purpose, he orders Aunt Efendia to gather the best illuminators in the country, whose secret task is to paint the book in the style of the European masters of the time. But as figurative art was considered a violation of Islam, this order was not without danger for the executors, which is why no illuminator is allowed to see the book in its entirety.
Problems begin when one of the miniaturists disappears, and the Sultan requests that his death be illuminated in three days. The only clue leading to the solution of the mystery is found in the unfinished illuminations. Was this death the work of an avenging angel who discovered the blasphemous act? Or will the blame fall on Kara, a jealous pretender to the hand of the aunt's daughter, the incomparable beauty Šekura?
This marvelous story is woven around mysterious murders and love, questioning of religion and philosophy, confrontation of East and West, and, especially, around the art of the miniature in the moments of its retreat and disappearance. It is told by the characters themselves, and therefore each new chapter provides insight into the events from a different point of view. Such a preachy approach expresses the author's attitude that "writing a novel offers the pleasure of a view from above, like when we look at a scene from a balcony."

Orhan Pamuk, born in Istanbul in 1952, is the most prominent contemporary Turkish novelist, the author of seven novels, and his works have been translated
into more than twenty languages. The White Castle (1985) won the Independent's prize for foreign literature. Black Book (1990) and New Life (1994) followed, the biggest Turkish bestseller up to that time, but the novel My Name is Red (1998) soon surpassed New Life. My name is Red also earned Pamuk the prestigious IMPAC Dublin International Literary Award for 2003. Orhan Pamuk won the Peace Prize of German Publishers in 2005 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006.
