Summary
Robert William Chambers: The Yellow Sign
"Chambers is one of the pioneers in the construction of neomythologies in horror literature; that is to say, he did not, like his predecessors, rely on existing myths, legends and folklore, but based on them, including certain literary ancestors, he created, or rather sketched, his own mythology. He sketched it out of pieces, fragments, as a kind of horror puzzle - but wisely taking care to give readers only a few pieces of the picture, not all, or even most, of the whole picture. He provided enough for mystification, let alone mythology in the full sense of the word. He knew that the effect would always be greater if enough empty space was left between those pieces, to project their own imaginations onto it." - Dejan Ognjanović
