Oncogenes and their products, as well as normal growth factors that regulate cell differentiation and enable tissue and organ growth, have only recently been discovered and partially defined. The chemical composition of some of them is known, but the exact function and molecular mechanisms of action for most of them are still being investigated. These studies are important not only because they explain the processes of transformation of a normal cell into a malignant one, but also because they open up new possibilities for early diagnosis and potentially more efficient treatment of malignant tumors. The book presents the latest data on the presence of certain oncogenes in normal and malignant cells, on the mechanisms of their activation, on the products of oncogenes, on the similarity of the chemical composition - and consequently the function - of oncogene products with growth factors in normal cells, data on the autocrine control of tumor growth and the action of anti-oncogenes.
