Preparations for the construction of the new Đakovo cathedral began already at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. Primarily due to a lack of funds, it was only built between 1866 and 1882. The main initiator of the construction of this building is the bishop of Đakovo, Josip Juraj Strossmayer. Already in the early 1950s, Strossmayer began the first steps in the construction of his new table church. He came into contact with the Viennese architect Karl Rösner, who completed his first project for Đakovo in 1854. Rösner dies in 1869, after which, in September 1870, Friedrich von Schmidt succeeds him as chief architect, who will lead the works until 1882, i.e. the dedication of the cathedral.
Between 1876 and 1882, and even later, Schmidt will be assisted by the architect Hermann Bollé in the creation of projects for the equipment of the Đakovo cathedral. Strossmayer intended to entrust the painting of the cathedral to the German Nazarene painter Johann Friedrich Overbeck, but before his death he managed to create only cardboard for the frescoes, on which only a partial painting will be relayed. The painting of the cathedral was carried out by father and son Alexander Maximilian and Lodovico Seitz, followers of the Nazarene painters from Rome. Croatian sculptors Vatroslav Donegani and Ivan Rendić are the authors of most of the sculptures on the altars and reliefs in the cathedral.
