The author provides a concise history of older Greek philosophers through the selected teachings of five thinkers - Thales, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides and Anaxagoras, and this "wonderful idealized society of philosophers" also includes Empedocles, Democritus and Socrates. According to Nietzsche, it is precisely these old sages who express the great traits of the Greek genius, and starting with Plato, philosophers lack something essential, they become "philosophical hybrid characters". The Greeks found the main types of the philosophical spirit, so later generations had nothing important to add and only among the Greeks, Nietzsche claims, is the philosopher not accidental.
