Komunizam kao religija

Summary

Mihail Riklin: Communism as a religion

The book Communism as a religion by one of the most famous contemporary Russian philosophers, Mikhail Riklin, deals today, in a time of great changes and major crises, from economic, ecological, religious to political, with the extremely interesting and stimulating topic of communism, and consequently other great ideologies of the twentieth century, as a substitute for religion. In a tense analysis of the development of communism as a religion, Riklin shows how from the very beginning the Bolsheviks believed in a radical transformation of the world based on atheism. After coming to power, the Bolsheviks declared war on religions, but they replaced the old rituals with their own holy places and saints, from "honorary corners" and wall newspapers to lavish ceremonial parades and Lenin's mausoleum. At the same time, Riklin analyzes the reasons why exactly communism, which Raymond Aron rightly called "opium for intellectuals", like no other political religion of the twentieth century attracted Western intellectuals so much. On the example of Russell's, Benjamin's, Koestler's, Gide's, Feuchtwanger's, Brecht's and other authors' texts, Riklin studies different aspects of communist doctrine, as well as the religious potential found in atheism and the transformation of prophecies that pretended to be scientific into an object of faith and worship.
