Summary
Sergej Lebedev: The Debutant
In a secret laboratory located on a remote Soviet island, Professor Kaljitin, in the depths of dark dungeons dug under the massive domes of the former monastery, created the most important creation of his life - the Debutant - a chemical weapon that instantly kills the victim without leaving a trace. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kaljitin goes to the West, where, near a peaceful
town, with a new identity and a fatal disease, he surrenders to his memories and hopes that he will have the opportunity to perfect his terrifying poison. But Russia, just like the USSR, has no mercy for traitors, especially not at the moment of the threat of exposing its superior chemical weapons: Major Grebenyuk and Lieutenant Colonel Shershnev set out on a mission carrying an elegant bottle of Debutant in their luggage.
In this fast-paced Faustian story, Sergey Lebedev weaves tense pages of stunningly beautiful prose exploring the historical paths of evil. From Nazi laboratories, Stalinist conspiracies and the Chechen wars to today's Russia, the political novel Debitant questions the ethical responsibility of scientists who supply modern tyrants and autocrats with ever newer instruments of revenge, destruction and control.
