Summary

Rene Descartes: The Passions of the Soul

The Passions of the Soul (originally French: Les Passions de l'âme) is the last great and extremely important philosophical work of the founder of modern modern philosophy Rene Descartes, completed in 1649 and dedicated to his longtime pen pal and student, Princess Elizabeth of Palatinate. The book represents the culmination of the author's lifelong dealing with the problem of the relationship between the human mind (soul) and the body, trying to scientifically and rationally explain how non-corporeal thought can affect physical movements and vice versa. In this discussion, Descartes abandons pure metaphysics and approaches man almost as a physical mechanism, claiming that "passions" are actually physiological reactions - excitements of the soul caused by the movement of the so-called "spirits of life" through the nervous system, which converge in the pineal gland (epiphysis) inside the brain. The author systematically classifies human feelings, distinguishing six fundamental, primary passions: admiration, love, hatred, desire, joy and grief, from which all other complex emotions develop. The greatest value of the work lies in its modern ethical message: instead of a radical and ascetic rejection of emotions, Descartes advocates their deep understanding, mastery and control with the help of reason and free will, because precisely directed passions form the basis of true human happiness and wisdom.
