Bruno Giordano

Summary

Giordano Bruno: The Overthrow of the Victorious Beast

Dialogues on Morality Bruno's famous work The Overthrow of the Victorious Beast is a kind of confrontation with the ruling prejudices of the age in which he lived. The Church spread and maintained the prejudices that were the basis of the institutionalized view of the world, and opposition to the ruling dogmas meant exposure to danger. (We should not forget that it was Bruno who was one of the most famous victims of the Church.). This is why Bruno does not write directly, but uses all the means at his disposal: erudition, irony, humor, causticism, metaphors... The knowledge of the historical moment in which he lived is shaped in the work in such a way that a text is created that - due to its complexity, metaphorical weaving, hidden allusions and cautious clues - is not easy to break through, but which is still fascinating today due to its literary value and weight. Behind the comical mask of paganism, Bruno questions the ruling values of his time, and in the pagan hierarchy of gods it is possible to recognize Christian hierarchies. Namely, Jupiter called the gods to a council where a new order would be established. This is where the decision is made to overthrow the ruling beasts - human vices. Vices should be replaced by virtues. But the virtues (along with the way they are instilled in people) are also a problem. At that moment, the main plot begins. Bruno writes a powerful, seductive, deep work.
