Summary
Jan. N Bremmer: Initiation into the Mysteries of the Ancient World
"...This book is not an exhaustive study of the ancient cults that are generally labeled as mysteries. My aim is simpler: I try to describe, in as much detail as possible, the initiation rituals of those mystery cults about which we know the most. Since Burkert did not do this, it is difficult to deduce from his approach what really happened during these rituals. I generally do not enter into a more general discussion of the cults of deities associated with the mysteries because, on for example, an exhaustive study of Demeter and Persephone, the Kabirs, Isis or Mithras could easily fill a whole book by itself - as often happened. I made an exception only for Orphism because the number of new discoveries in the last decades created the need to present a more contemporary picture of that religious movement, which nevertheless allows us to place the Orphic-Bacchian mysteries in their proper context..."
