Summary

Oswald Spengler: The Two Faces of Russia

The book contains four "political" essays with a special focus on Russia. The essays were written after the First World War, and their main idea is to point out the problems and possibilities of re-establishing Germany as an equal power within the European division of forces. The answer to that is an assessment of the policy of Germany's competitors, France and England, who do not want a strong Germany, as well as an attempt to understand the little-known policy of the "giant from the East" Russia, and its possibilities. Assessing the situation at the time when these essays were written, Spengler goes back to the past, to the Napoleonic Wars, but also projects future events and relations, again with special reference to the "unknown eastern" Russia, where he hopes that the Petrovic European, and now the Bolshevik government, will have to retreat before the "other face" of Russia, that "peasant" endless-steppe mentality of Russia or that unpredictable-anarchic one, which in the greatest characters from Dostoyevsky's novel.
