Summary

Gun Ayurzana: The Legend of the Shaman

The novel The Legend of the Shaman tells about the life and customs of the Buryats, one of the many peoples who live on the soil of Russia today. Most Buryats practice Buddhism. However, a small percentage of the inhabitants, followers of shamanism, survived. The slowly disappearing tradition of shamanism, a stay on the island of Olkhon on Lake Baikal and a close encounter with the depths of Buryat shamanism and its culture inspired Ayurzan to write this novel (the author believes that only after this novel did he become a real writer). Before staying on that island, Ayurzana, according to his own admission, preferred Buddhism in the religious sense, while he considered shamanism a form of ancient superstition, and then he said through the mouth of the hero of his novel that every religion is shamanism. The hero of the novel, the young Mongol Tengis, arrives from Ulaanbaatar to the island of Olkhon, in order to meet the Buryat shamans there. While staying on the island, however, he himself experiences visions that force him to stay there and become an assistant to the old shaman Hagdai. In the end, the old shaman dies, and young Tengis in turn prepares to become a shaman himself...
