Del Ponte Carla | Sudetic Chuck

Summary

Carla del Ponte, Chuck Sudetic: Madam Prosecutor

Carla Del Ponte became known to the wider international public at the time when, as the chief prosecutor of Switzerland, she began to prosecute the Sicilian mafia. In 1999, she responded to the invitation of the United Nations and became the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. In her new position, Del Ponte directly confronted genocide and crimes against humanity, trying to bring to justice the most prominent individuals responsible for mass violence in Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Croatia and Kosovo.
These two courts are unprecedented in the history of mankind. They operate on the dividing line between national sovereignty and responsibility before the international community, in the gray zone between justice and politics, in a largely new and unexplored area for prosecutors and judges. It is an area whose natural inhabitants - political leaders and soldiers, diplomats and spies - believe they can commit unprecedented crimes on a wide scale with impunity. The area is intersected by what Del Ponte calls the muro di gomma - "rubber wall" - using the metaphor that most accurately describes the tactics used by various government officials in an effort to conceal their unwillingness to confront the culture of impunity that allows those responsible for unspeakable violence to go unpunished.
