Summary
Seymour Martin Lipset and Jason M. Lakin: A Century of Democracy
This book is based on three lectures given by Seymour Martin Lipset at the University of Oklahoma in 1996 as part of the Julian J. Rothbaum Distinguished Lecturer Program. The original lectures were supplemented with additional texts and research, which increased their volume almost sixfold. Professor Lipset's three lectures were tentatively titled "Preconditions for Democracy", "Democracy in Latin America" and "The Role of George Washington". When I began working as Marty's research assistant at George Washington University in the fall of 1999, little had been done to transform the original lectures into book form, except that Bruce Robinson reworked a lecture on Latin America (his paper, slightly reworked, makes up almost a third of Part II of this book, which deals with Latin America).
For nearly a decade before our collaboration, Marty would hire a graduate student each academic year to work on different projects. In this, Marty preferred to choose recent graduates over post-graduates because it required total commitment and because, as he put it, he needed "Katica for everyone". Namely, he believed that students should spend their time studying. I believe that the assistants who worked with him before me will agree that this was a fantastic opportunity for all of us. Each of us was given the opportunity to work with one of the most respected scientists of the 20th century - a generous Man who, on the eve of his career, enjoyed spending time imparting his vast knowledge to an appreciative audience and future political scientists and sociologists. As far as I know, most of Marty's associates spent nine months working with him and then went on to higher degrees. Many of them (not including me, of course) will surely join the ranks of Seymour Martin Lipset's distinguished former students, and James Coleman, Juan Linz and Larry Diamond should certainly be mentioned among them.
