Vrlina nacionalizma

Hazony Yoram

Summary

Yoram Hazony: Virtue of nationalism

The question of identity is one of the most important issues of modern societies, including Israel, where the author comes from, Croatia, the European Union and the West in general. Nationalism and national identity are the subjects of sharp polemics, and the sharpness of polemics is always based on a bad, incomplete and inaccurate understanding of nationalism as a modern phenomenon and as a political philosophy, but also of "liberal internationalism" or "liberal globalism" which is often viewed too favorably and without recognizing the totalitarian dangers that, like any imperialist idea, it is capable of spawning. Yoram Hazony indicates that in Britain, through the exit from the EU and in America through Trump's victory in the 2016 elections, nationalism has become relevant again, although today's discourse in society, which has only existed for a few decades, indicates that nationalism is "something evil". Nationalism, however, was held to be the opposite of imperialism until recently, and the author points out that it is still the case. Opposing imperialism and advocating the right of the people to political, economic, cultural and other freedom and independence, Hazony convincingly explains why the nation state is the best framework for realizing these freedoms and rights. In the work, the author refers to historical experiences, which go back to ancient Middle Eastern empires and the Jewish state. In this work, Hazony critically examines the notion that liberal globalism is the opposite of violent nationalism, and shows that the opposite is at work: that liberal globalism becomes aggressive, suppresses critical thought and promotes single-mindedness, and is essentially the bearer of new imperialism. It is a defensible point of view, fully grounded in political reality, which deserves attention, but is not common in mainstream political analyses. That is why this book by Hazony greatly contributes to political reflections and a better understanding of contemporary Western social processes. - Assoc. Ph.D. Boris Havel
