Herbert Lewandowski: The History of Roman Customs

Lucius Verus' lover, Panthea from Smyrna, owes her posthumous fame mainly to the praises expressed to her by the most witty writer of the time, Lucian, during his temporary stay in Smyrna (year 162) in his dialogue "Pictures". Her beauty - so says the writing dedicated to her - would be possible to describe only if the features of the most famous masterpieces of the Greek brush and chisel, which she combines, were compiled; her voice is the sweetest melody, she surpasses nightingales in singing in skill and melody, so that even Orpheus and Amphion would listen to her silently; her guitar playing is equally masterful, she has the most lively preference for poetry, she is well versed in the works of historians, orators and philosophers. In terms of experience, political insight, sharpness and quickness of mind, she is similar to Aspasia or in this she is even greater, as the Roman Empire towers over Pericles' Athena; then he is compared to Pythagoras' wife, Theana, to Sappho, to Diotima. Then praise is given to her goodness and kindness, her gentleness and kindness to supplicants, her good nature and faithfulness. Her happiness does not make her arrogant, she treats those who approach her with ease and equality, and her kind demeanor is all the more attractive, as she is not puffed up at all, although she is a tall person. After all, her appearance showed that she occupied a high position; she was surrounded by numerous splendid servants, maids, eunuchs and soldiers...
