Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is one of the most significant political icons of the 20th century. Numerous books and scientific papers have been written about his role in the creation of the Republic of Turkey, among which there are undoubtedly some extremely valuable ones. And yet, in principle, it can be stated that many of these works on Atatürk's life and work are often one-sided - either overly affirmative or unfoundedly critical - and that most authors selectively used narrative sources and documents. Compared to other works, Andrew Mang's contribution to the research of this topic is quite exceptional: he is the world's most famous expert on the subject he writes about, and his book is the best work published so far on Atatürk and the creation of the Republic of Turkey. The publication of Mango's excellent biography of Atatürk - an excellent mixture of nonfiction and scientific historiography with a dose of British cynicism and knowledge of the context - means a big step for familiarizing the Croatian public with modern Turkish history.
