Summary
Antonio Höller: Augusta Carolinae virtutis monumenta seu aedifica a Carolo VI. per orbem austriacum publico bono posita.
a very rare and interesting book about the construction of the Karolina road
Karolina is the first road link in Croatia between the Pannonian and Adriatic areas (from Karlovac to Bakr and Rijeka), and it was opened on this day in 1728.
It was named after the Croatian-Hungarian king Charles III, who initiated it. construction, and it was designed by the Austrian military engineer Antun Matija Weiss. The road followed the route of the old riding trail, and was divided into a lowland section (Gospić-Brušane) and a mountain section (Brušane-Karlobag).
It was the first road that crossed the so-called devil's garden (Hortus diabolici), as the Romans called the current Gorski kotar, that is, the area that blocked the connection between Karlovac and the coast. With the construction of the road, Rijeka was connected to continental Croatia, and thanks to this, Fužine also gained importance. However, the road was laid out by the shortest and cheapest route, the gradients reached up to 35%, which made traffic very difficult. Due to the increase in traffic, another road was built through Gorski kotar, Lujzinska cesta, at that time one of the most modern roads in the world. Both Karolinska cesta, Jozefina, and Lujzina cesta represented the architectural achievements of their time, despite the fact that roads like Karolina were ultimately replaced by better options. Some parts of the old macadam road have been asphalted over time, and today part of it is a forest road that can be crossed by an alternative route.
