The preoccupation of Bešlagić's interest is stone, the work of human creativity in stone. These are stećci, niches, stools and troughs, mostly tombstones, but also inscriptions, methods of manufacture, symbolism of decoration, affiliation, distribution, recording, conservation, protection and use value of stone. Many years of thematic specialization resulted in accomplishments that rank him among the most famous historians of material culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bešlagić advocated for the protection of material monuments as integral cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He achieved the greatest reach with an extensive catalog review of stećaks from 1971 and a synthesis of stećaks from 1982.
