Since the book "Your Child" has drawn attention to important events in the emotional, physical and social development of a child, many readers have asked me to cover the next year. This book expands the concept of important events up to the important year of starting school. In writing this book, I had the opportunity to work with my colleague Joshua Sparrow, MD, a child psychiatrist at Children's Hospital in Boston, and I deepened my thinking and approach to children of that age. By working together, we were able to combine our approaches and I hope readers will see the benefits that our collaboration has brought. Together we enjoyed exploring the child's development and potential for the future. Readers of the first book were comforted by the knowledge that regressions in children's behavior appear just before a developmental leap that is healthy and constructive. It is reassuring to see periods of regression as an opportunity to reorganize in preparation for a period of rapid development. Any new effort in motor or emotional development will probably be heralded by disorganization and regression in the child's behavior; understanding these sequences of events and predicting them has proven invaluable to those who care for young children.
