Summary

Mary Dugain: Edgar's Curse

Edgar Hoover, who was the head of the FBI for almost half a century, overshadowed all American ruling men. From 1924 to 1972, the greatest historical American personalities will be persecuted in their intimate lives by the man who set himself up as the guarantor of morality. Marc Dugain uses dialogue, wiretap summaries and intelligence to debunk the Memoirs attributed to Clyde Tolson, Edgar's assistant. The author tries to penetrate into the psychological motives of a man who enjoyed great power, who fought passionately to obtain it and preserve it until his last breath. But it is also a story about a man who suffered a lot. As a self-proclaimed guarantor of American puritanism, he had a hard time dealing with his homosexuality and openly displayed homophobic behavior as a counterweight to it. In any case, to recount Hoover's life is to write a genealogy of American power that also illuminates today's events. Hoover, who considered America very dirty, especially sexual deviations, used a sophisticated and brutal method at the same time - which allowed him to avoid great damage. But it was after his death that the biggest scandal in modern American history broke out, Watergate. Besides that. Hoover was the leader of anti-communism, while McCarthy was just a puppet in his hands. Why did Hoover focus so much on this great investigation of American intellectuals while at the same time leaving the underground alone? It seems that everything remains in duplicitous relations between organized crime, politicians and Hoover himself, in entanglements of blackmail and extortion where everyone holds everyone until everything is destroyed. Dugain's novel is read non-stop and leaves the reader breathless. Marc Dugain was born in 1957 in Senegal. He received eighteen literary awards for the novel Officer's Room (La ehambre des officiers), which appeared in 1998. After the Battle of England (Campagne anglaise) and the novel Happy as God in France (Heruex comme Dieu en France), Edgar's Curse (2005) is his fourth novel, which achieved great success in France.
