Meletinski Eleazar

Summary

Eleazar Meletinski: Paleo-Asian mythological epic

This paper is dedicated to the review and analysis of the mythological epic of the Paleo-Asians of the Chukotka-Kamchat language group, focused mainly on the figure of the Raven - a cultural hero and trickster. Since very similar myths about the Raven are widespread throughout Alaska - among the Eskimos, Athapaskan and especially among the Indians northwest coast of America, the American versions are also analyzed here. The study of this extraordinarily colorful mythological epic is of great interest due to its undoubted archaicness and distribution on both sides of the Bering Sea. At the same time, this study can be carried out both on the level of historical folklore typology, and on the level of discovering the ancient core in the cultural heritage of the entire arctic zone, i.e. taking into account the problems of Asian-American folklore relations. These two plans are closely related to each other, since the absence of much more intense ties between the natives of Chukotka-Kamchatka and the Alaskan Indians leads us to place related elements of mythology in the most ancient past and clearly stratify the Paleo-Asian folklore massif precisely along the lines of historical typology.
