Summary

Zrinka Blažević: Illyrism before Illyrism

While preparing my previous book, Vitezović's Croatia between reality and utopia, I saw that, apart from contemporary political and cultural practices, the formation of Vitezović's complex ideological conception must have been influenced by some older intellectual tradition, traces that could be seen in the deeper layers of his discourse. Therefore, I decided to embark on research into the discursive and, in general, cultural "prehistory" of Vitezović's pan-Croatism. As expected, the trail led to late humanism, from the creative atmosphere of which, along with other, more famous European national ideologies such as Teutonism and Sarmatism, their (South) Slavic counterpart - Illyrism - grew. Of course, this required a certain revision of the established interpretation of Illyrianism as a modern, nineteenth-century ideological phenomenon, but also a more complex approach to Croatian national ideology in general. Namely, rather than an exclusivist national narrative, it is realized as a discursive heterotopia that was ideologically formed and discursively articulated in the space of creative contestation of universal and particular, homogeneous and heterogeneous, own and Other. I presented the results of my research in my doctoral dissertation entitled The Illyrian Ideologist during the 17th Century: Uses, Functions, Meanings of which this book is an elaborated and significantly supplemented version.
Still, I certainly would not have been able to deal with all the pitfalls of early modern Illyrianism if it were not for the professional and human support of numerous colleagues, friends and associates.
