Summary
Francisco Bethencourt: The Inquisition in the Modern Age
Spain, Italy and Portugal from the 15th to the 19th century
The Inquisition was mostly studied as a topic, not as a problem. It represented, in itself, an interesting topic for research, which provided the possibility for different temporal and spatial divisions and adaptations. Thus, religious courts were observed on the micro-scale of villages and on a slightly wider scale of cities or districts, in periods marked by repressive political and social events, or else for the purposes of writing studies in which the courts played the role of suggestive scenarios for the study of "folk" culture or belief.
