After the assassination and tragic death of King Knight Alexander I. Karađorđević the Unifier on October 9, 1934 in Marseille, and in accordance with his will, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia remained until the coming of age of the young prince Peter II. Karađorđević was governed by a three-member Governorship headed by Prince Pavlo. The assassination of the Yugoslav ruler on the soil of friendly France exposed all the fragility and vulnerability of the young state of the South Slavs, but also laid bare the unstable political and moral relations in interwar Europe. Extremist national groups and communist parties—which after the October Revolution of 1917 had grown stronger and wreaked havoc in many countries, including Yugoslavia—raised their heads and opposed the dynasty, causing religious and political instability. The growing weakness of Europe was also evident: the victorious countries in the Great War lost their primacy in the peacetime period, while the defeated forces grew stronger and a few years later led to a new war.
