By carefully following the history and culture of our people, we could see how unfavorable the historical circumstances were for the development of culture. On the other hand, culture resisted everything, maintained, produced creative results. In all times since we follow the history of the Serbian nation, we find evidence of cultural life and rich remains of spiritual creativity. Although much of what was created has been irretrievably lost, what remains convincingly shows that cultural creation in many branches was constant and stable. This vitalism represents one of the basic features of Serbian culture as a whole. (...) As the culture of a small nation, which history has so many times restrained, brought to the brink of existence, Serbian culture created values, the greatest of which are not only national, but also enter the world treasury. From its beginnings to modern times, it has developed as part of European and world culture in terms of aspirations, forms and expressions.
