Summary

Franz Kafka: Transformation and Other Stories

"Kafka is one of the greatest writers of our century." – Vladimir Nabokov The Judgment * The Makeover * The Blumfeld Bachelor * Report to the Academy * In the Penal Colony * The Starving Artist * Josephine the Singer or the Regiment of Mice * The Den Franz Kafka's work is now more than a century old. Despite this, it continues to capture the keen interest of readers, and younger generations are rediscovering it with genuine interest. In the new translation by Maja Anastasijević, we have before us a collection of eight stories, each of which is a separate parable. A world opens before us in which we cannot rely on certainties: the heroes are isolated, they feel guilt, inadequacy or powerlessness, and their attempts to resist the problematic situation are completely futile. Despite their ingenuity, caution and invested energy, they not only fail in their endeavors, but also face merciless punishment. The reader perceives this as an injustice and deeply sympathizes with them. The Kafkaesque atmosphere marked many periods of the 20th and even the first decades of the 21st century, which is why we return to that writer and read and interpret him with undiminished attention and affection. Faced with incomprehensible events in reality, unattainable instances and alienated centers of power, even today we strongly feel the painful truth about the position of Kafka's heroes.
