Summary
Hrvoje Matković: Designated Croatian King Tomislav II. duke of Spoleto History of Croatian-Italian relations in the first half of the 20th century
The designation of the Italian duke as Croatian king under the name of Tomislav II, which was sponsored by Ante Pavelić and Benito Mussolini in 1941, remained on the margins of Croatian historiography. Few historians have seriously dealt with the idea of the possible transformation of the Independent State of Croatia into a monarchy. In the monographic study of prof. Dr. Hrvoje Matković, an expert on Croatia in the 20th century, gives a central place to that historical episode. Not only as an interesting and poorly researched topic, but also as an intersection of tensions and disputes in Croatian-Italian relations.
