Summary
Filip Katanić: The Last Days of Chivalry
A series of four books under the common title "The Last Days of Chivalry - Cavalry Battles of the First World War and Croats" brings to the Croatian readership for the first time a systematic review of the battles in which cavalry played its last role on the world war scene. Until then, an unchallenged military power, that marvelous combination of human war skills and horse power, whose stomping of racial hooves terrified opposing forces for centuries, will go down in history with dignity on the blood-soaked European battlefields.
The work, written by an excellent connoisseur of military horsemanship, military historian and doctoral student in history, Filip Katanić, presents a comprehensive account of the twilight of military horsemanship, emphasizing the role of Croats in units of the Austro-Hungarian Ulan and Hussars. With an abundance of examples and photographs and a clear and simple writing style, this work will certainly intrigue not only the scientific but also the general readership. In this first book, Katanić introduces the reader to the subject with a professorial logic, vividly evoking the historical development of war cavalry and warfare tactics, which he rounds off with a presentation of the role of war cavalry in the initial battles of the first global world conflict.
There should be no doubt at all that this is an exceptional contribution to Croatian and world historiography; extensive work, which is not only based on numerous domestic and foreign literature, but also on very valuable archival material, which saw the light of day for the first time precisely in this work. A lot more could and should be boasted, and the proof of these claims, dear reader, is hidden between the covers of the book you are holding in your hand right now.
