Summary

Jovan Savković: Overview of the origin, development and development of the Military Border (from the XVI century to 1873)-2nd ed.

The book "Overview of the origin, development and development of the Military Border (from the XVI century to 1873)" by Jovan Savković is an important historiographical work that describes in detail the origin, evolution and abolition of the Military Border (Military borders) under Habsburg rule

  • First edition: 1964, publisher Matica srpska (Novi Sad), paperback, 176 pages.
  • New edition: 2023, publisher SKD Prosvjeta (Zagreb), hardcover, 263 pages, written in Cyrillic

The book is structured chronologically and thematically through three main phases covered by the title itself:

  1. Emergence of the Military Frontier (16th century): The author analyzes the Turkish conquests and the Habsburg Monarchy's need to create a special defense zone. It describes the settlement of border guards (Krajisniks), a predominantly Serbian and Croatian population, and the obtaining of special privileges (such as Vlach Statutes / Statuta Valachorum) in exchange for lifelong military service. 2. Development and internal arrangement: The transformation of the Border from an improvised defensive wall into a strictly organized, autonomous military-administrative system under direct by the command of Vienna (Palace War Council). Savković deals in detail with the specific social and economic arrangement, the role of household cooperatives and the transformation of the border guards into a regular army that fought all over Europe for the interests of the Monarchy.
  3. Demilitarization and abolition (until 1873): The process of losing its primary defense function after the weakening of the Ottoman Empire is analyzed. The book describes in detail the political struggles, the process of development (demilitarization) and finally the introduction of civil administration and the integration of these areas into Croatia and Slavonia, which culminated in the imperial decision on development in 1873.

The work is a useful handbook for historians, researchers and anyone interested in military history, social relations and demographic changes in today's Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia (Vojvodina).
