Summary
Francisco de Portenschlag-Ledermayer: Enumeratio plantarum in Dalmatia lectarum
Franz von Portenschlag-Ledermayer (1772-1822) was an Austrian botanist (although he started his career as a lawyer), but he gave up his calling to practice botany and carry out botanical research.
When the Emperor Francis I decided in 1818 to visit the corners of his country along the border with By the Turkish Empire, he was accompanied by the botanist Franz von Portenschlag-Ledermayer. That trip resulted in his most significant contribution to botany - he discovered about 200 new plant species. As the emperor's companion, he fell seriously ill and died four years later. He prepared an extensive book about plants in Dalmatia, however, as he left relatively few notes, the work was never published in its entirety.
That is why Enumeratio plantarum in Dalmatia lectarum is a very rare posthumous work edited by some of Portenschlag's friends. The text was written by Leopold Trattinick (1764-1849), and the graphic plates are based on plants collected by Portenschlag and (except No. 1) drawn by Rochel. The text also contains a short biography of Portenschlag written by Trattinick.
