Summary
Erich Fromm: Escape from Freedom
Escape from Freedom is an analysis of the phenomenon of man's anxiety caused by the decline of the medieval world in which he felt safe, despite numerous dangers. After a century of struggle, man managed to build an unimagined wealth in material goods; he built democratic societies in various parts of the world and recently successfully defended himself against new totalitarian plots; nevertheless, as the analysis in Escape from Freedom tries to show, modern man is still restless and tempted to surrender his freedom to dictators of various kinds, or to lose it by turning into a small cog in a machine, well-fed and trained: he is no longer a free man, but a robot.
